Artificial Flower Fashion Collection, 2021

Fashion / Textiles / Accessory Design

In 2021, I conceived, led, and directed Artificial Flower, a fashion and accessories collection under my eponymous brand. As the sole designer, I led a team of over 50 collaborators from diverse cultural and national backgrounds across fabrication, production, presentation to bring the project to life.

Inspired by funerary traditions in my rural hometown of Nanzhao, China—where synthetic flowers symbolize memory and community bonds—the collection reimagines remembrance through fashion and textile innovation. I recreated fading cultural textures using 3D scans, X-rays, and hand illustration, combining traditional Chinese and Western weaving and beading techniques—all crafted with tools I designed myself. These artificial flowers became vessels of memory, fusing ritual with material reinvention. The project bridges heritage and experimental craftsmanship, reflecting my belief that preservation is a form of sustainability—where tradition, craft, and personal history endure through the language of design.

COLLECTION OVERVIEW

ACCESSORY DESIGN

ROBOTIC FLOWERS

In Nanzhao, funerals are marked by vibrant artificial flowers and the sound of suona, a Chinese instrument played to honor the dead. Robotic flowers in this collection, animated through 3D modeling, wire testing, and programming, that bloom in choreographed sequences. The centerpiece features 1,000 mechanical flowers sewn by hand, designed to open and close in rhythm, echoing the act of honoring the deceased with synthetic petals.

FASHION SHORT FILM

The Artificial Flower Film presents the story of ZEHUA 2022 fashion collection: Artificial Flower 人造花. "In an ever-changing world, preserving the precious fleeting moments prompted the main concept of the Artificial Flower collection. By using artificiality, a parallel world was created to strengthen the details from places and people that disappeared into nothing but memories. The collection is about simultaneously reminiscing and transforming manipulations of the past, present, and future. Using a specific familial relationship, the artificial flower not only represents eternity, but it captures and sustains the memories within us."
